The Tarragona Maritime Captaincy commemorated the Day of the Seafarer by presenting the Redes Awards for maritime safety in fishing vessels. The event, held at the Government Sub-delegation in Tarragona, recognized the commendable work carried out in safety matters by various vessels.
The Government's sub-delegate, Elisabet Romero, opened the ceremony, emphasizing that the awards aim to "reward safety so that it becomes a conviction beyond a form to be filled out." She thanked the maritime captaincy for their work and highlighted the importance of the fishing sector and the support of its families.
The maritime captain of Tarragona, José Manuel Robledano, valued the compliance with maritime safety requirements, stating that it "entails accident prevention, navigation safety, and guarantees the safety of human life at sea." Robledano expressed his hope that the awards would serve as motivation for greater competition in future editions.
The accolades recognized vessels such as ‘Germans Alcántara II’ and ‘Iaio Alex’ (2024 awardees), and ‘Ciroag’ and ‘Rosmari Primero’ (2025 awardees), belonging to the fishing guilds of Cases d’Alcanar, l’Ametlla de Mar, and La Ràpita.
During the event, a round table discussion on the fishing sector took place, with participation from Ángel Calejero (Provincial Director of the Social Institute for the Merchant Navy), Xavier Domènech (Secretary of the Territorial Federation of Fishing Guilds of Tarragona), and Javier Acebes Escudero (Maritime Safety Inspector).
One of the aspects most valued by the jury was the condition of the awarded vessels. Safety technical inspections conducted by the Maritime Captaincy on 114 fishing vessels over the past year recorded zero deficiencies in the selected boats, demonstrating excellent maintenance.
Robledano pointed out that this success is the result of a "solid preventive culture," where the awarded crews actively applied the regulations provided by the administration. It was also highlighted that safety does not depend on the age or material of the vessels, but on the daily care and investment by shipowners and sailors.
The commemoration of the Day of the Seafarer, promoted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is celebrated every June 25th to recognize the essential work of individuals who enable maritime transport and the supply of products from the sea, often under difficult and dangerous conditions.
