The Tarragona Amphitheatre has launched a mixed reality experience, becoming the first Roman monument globally to offer an immersive recreation of games from 1,800 years ago.

Visitors to the Tarragona Amphitheatre can now experience what a day of games with gladiators, elephants, lions, and rhinos was like, thanks to a new mixed reality experience. This technology allows them to see, hear, and live the atmosphere of 1,800 years ago, following the story of a young gladiator aspirant.
The mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, highlighted that mixed reality enables the monument's history to be explained through new languages, reaching new audiences and making the visit more personal, understandable, and exciting.
The project, named 'Clam de Tarraco', was driven by WeRiseUp, a company originating from PortAventura. This spin-off previously launched a similar experience on a roller coaster last year. The general director of PortAventura World, Fernando Aldecoa, emphasized the uniqueness of Tarragona and its World Heritage status as ideal for this technology.
The visit with mixed reality glasses combines direct observation of the monument with digital reconstructions, special audio, and synchronized narrative elements. This immersive experience lasts about twelve minutes and allows visitors to appreciate the archaeological value of the site.
Some children from the Escola Miracle were the first to try the technology. Simón Milà, 12 years old, described feeling as if the beasts might attack him, while his sister Elia, 9 years old, remembered the emperor and the rhinoceros she had to dodge.
This supplementary service has an additional cost of 7 euros per visitor.
