The municipal company Ematsa launched the new Bonavista Water Treatment Plant (ETAP) this Thursday, a strategic project aimed at reducing Tarragona's dependence on the Ebro river supply.

The 1.7 million euro facility ensures that 40,000 people in the Ponent districts can be supplied for weeks using local resources if the Tarragona Water Consortium (CAT) pipeline fails.
Water is sourced from the Boella and Soler-Bas wells, which have seen levels recover following recent rainfall. The plant uses active carbon filters and iron removal systems to treat the water before it reaches a 12.5 million-liter storage tank.

"A plan C would be a desalination plant that could be located at the Port of Tarragona."

Rubén Viñuales · Mayor of Tarragona
Mayor Rubén Viñuales confirmed the project will not increase water bills. Future investments totaling 1.6 million euros are planned to improve pressure in Buenos Aires and expand the network in la Canonja.
