The public company Mercats Tarragona has promoted the rehabilitation of the Mercat del Fòrum, closed for two decades, aiming to reopen it in 2027 as a center dedicated to local gastronomy and culture.
The basic project, commissioned to the Lligams architecture studio and led by architects Amalia Jansà and Maria Rius, seeks to restore the property, built in 1864, transforming it into a multifunctional market hall (llotja). This new configuration will allow the building to open on three sides, integrating it into the urban platform of the adjacent squares.

"It will not be a product aimed at tourism, but a product aimed at citizenship because what we want is to highlight the value of proximity products. For us, gastronomy is truly identity and is one of the added values we have in Tarragona."
The architectural proposal outlines four possible usage scenarios: an itinerant market with four mobile, collapsible stalls, a tasting area for gastronomic events, a bar terrace, and an auditorium for small acoustic concerts or cultural events. The main objective is to “Explain the history of the city through food,” emphasizing local products such as oil, wine, and nuts.
A notable aspect of the rehabilitation is the recovery of materials from the old market itself. An inventory has been carried out of all the obsolete marble pieces to reuse them, following the Tarragona tradition of recycling ancient stones. Furthermore, a new interior façade is planned with a “clearly contemporary” aesthetic that harmonizes with the historical architecture.

"After almost twenty years closed, the Mercat is once again a reality thanks to Junts. We have moved from words to money. In total, there are now 700,000 euros to make it happen. The Part Alta needs life every day."
This project, resulting from an agreement between the Partit Socialista and Junts, will involve an investment close to one million euros. Mercats Tarragona has already carried out preliminary work to reinforce the structure and eliminate pathologies caused by lack of maintenance, with plans to soon tender the executive project.
