The supramunicipal body, owner of the property, closed the deadline for submitting proposals for the ideas competition last Friday, January 16. The process to select the winning proposal will now begin. The goal is to start the works, budgeted at around 9 million euros, by late 2027 to move the bulk of the Diputació's administrative activity.
The president of the Diputació de Tarragona, Noemí Llauradó, made the announcement during a meeting with journalists. She highlighted the historical value of the building, constructed in 1976, as it was the headquarters of the Provincial Savings Bank, founded by the Diputació itself in 1949.
“"It is an iconic building that has attracted the interest of high-level firms, and for us, it will be a return home."
The ten architecture firms competing for the project drafting, budgeted at 700,000 euros, include names such as Ausió Fernández Arquitectes, L35 Arquitectos, Ruiz-Larrea Arquitectura, and ABAA Arquitectura. Some of these firms are linked to major projects, such as the remodeling of the Camp Nou (ABAA Arquitectura) or the Santiago Bernabéu (L35 Arquitectos).
With the administrative relocation, the Palau de la Diputació, on Passeig de Sant Antoni, will become the institutional, political, and government headquarters. Furthermore, it will house the Museum of Modern Art (MAMT), following an agreement signed with the Generalitat de Catalunya last November. This protocol establishes that the Diputació must prepare three preliminary studies (museological plan, usage and space study, and action plan) before mid-2027 to finalize the project and the financial commitments of each administration.
