The Council of Ministers authorized Adif to tender a €13.22 million contract for the construction of the new European gauge changer in Vila-seca, securing the connection of the R16 line to Tortosa.

The contract, valued at €13.22 million (excluding VAT), includes the execution of the safety installations for the new gauge changer and the necessary track deviations at the Vila-seca junction, as reported by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
This infrastructure is essential to guarantee that passenger services on the R16 line of Rodalies de Barcelona can maintain their continuity all the way to the city of Tortosa, according to the Spanish Government.
Currently, Adif is working on adapting the section between Castellón and the Vila-seca hub to international gauge. This action also includes implementing this gauge on the branch line to Tortosa.
From the Vila-seca hub to Sant Vicenç de Calders, the installation of a third rail is planned to allow for mixed gauge operation. Consequently, R16 services originating in Tortosa will run on international gauge until Vila-seca, where they will switch to Iberian gauge to continue their journey to Barcelona.
