The agreement, unanimously approved in the municipal plenary session, includes the transfer of the first and second floors, two-thirds of the ground floor, and the exterior gardens. In return, the Associació Alba will be responsible for the building's maintenance and for seeking funding for the necessary works. The remaining part of the ground floor will be allocated to the new Local Police station.
The mayor, Sílvia Fernàndez, highlighted that this initiative represents "a new opportunity for the municipality" and addresses a long-standing demand. The council has also approved a 95% discount on construction tax to facilitate the completion of the housing project.
The project plans to create apartments and a residential home on the upper floors. The ground floor will house the Local Police and a multipurpose room managed by the Associació Alba, which local entities can also request to use. Currently, the association serves 43 individuals from Agramunt.
This initiative is part of the rehabilitation of the former barracks, a building acquired by the city council about 15 years ago and which had been disused. Renovation work began in 2022 with the collaboration of students from the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura del Vallès, part of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
