The Catalan Government confirmed this Friday the detection of a new case of avian flu in a poultry farm in Urgell, near Bellpuig, which will lead to the culling of 9,000 birds.

The new focus has been identified on a farm located just 3 kilometers from the initial outbreak in Bellpuig, within the surveillance radius established following the first confirmed case. The Generalitat explained that the rapid detection is the result of preventive analyses being carried out on all farms included within the control area.
The affected farm has 9,000 animals, which will be immediately culled, as established by the current sanitary protocol, with the aim of containing and eradicating the outbreak in the Urgell region.
Following this new detection, the Department of Agriculture has established a new 10-kilometer surveillance radius, increasing the number of affected municipalities. These now include Bellvís, Fuliola, Linyola, and Poal, and four more farms will be inspected.
Regarding human health, coordination has been activated with the Hospital Universitari Arnau de Vilanova to carry out preventive monitoring of poultry farm workers. The Government insists that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs poses no risk to human health.
