Farmers in the Urgell region are facing a critical situation this March 2026 as an unprecedented rabbit plague destroys cereal fields and fruit plantations across the area.

In municipalities such as Verdú and Preixana, the situation has forced some landowners to stop planting altogether. Recent rainfall has led to an abundance of food, causing the rabbit population to surge. In Verdú alone, approximately 200 hectares of land have been left unseeded due to the high risk of total crop loss.

"The rabbits devour everything before the plant even grows a few inches. This is the worst year in memory."

The damage extends beyond grain to olive and almond trees. While the Generalitat has pledged two million euros in aid, farmers argue this is far from enough to cover the rising costs of seeds and fuel, calling for more effective wildlife management policies.
