The BAT Devils of Tàrrega are celebrating their 40th anniversary with the aim of promoting a theatricalized vision of fire culture, extending beyond traditional correfocs. The group, currently comprising around 90 members and featuring the Drac de Tàrrega (Tàrrega Dragon) and the Diablessa (She-Devil), has traveled over 23,000 kilometers throughout its history. They have participated in significant events such as the closing ceremony of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and Expocultura in 1994.
Last Saturday, the celebration marked a historic milestone by organizing the first Urgell Devils' Gathering, uniting the four local fire groups: Vall del Corb, Foc Foll de Bellpuig, l'Espetec d'Agramunt, and the hosts from Tàrrega. The event featured a unique correfoc where 49 kilograms of gunpowder were used, gathering approximately 70 devils and 60 drummers.
“"To reclaim the culture of devils, which is a bit lacking in Lleida, and to foster camaraderie and unity."
The day commenced with drum parades through the center of Tàrrega, incorporating elements of local popular culture, and culminated in a joint performance at the Plaça Major, followed by a communal snack. The program also included a devilish musical bingo and a concert by the group Her Majesty.
The 40th-anniversary commemorative events began in May with the inauguration of a retrospective exhibition at the Sala Marsà and the unveiling of a commemorative mural at the Espai Fassina, created by Noèlia Sevillana.
