The call comes after the Spanish High Court raised preliminary questions to the TJUE, which has delayed the application of amnesty for those charged. The CDR urge mobilization regardless of the ruling's outcome, arguing that the repression against activists should not be overshadowed by media discourse on exile and the potential return of president Carles Puigdemont.
In a statement, the CDR expressed their unconditional support for the detainees, although they criticize the amnesty law as a Spanish state tactic to "deactivate the fight for independence" and "whitewash itself before international public opinion." They emphasize that they do not celebrate the amnesty itself, as it represents a Spanish measure of grace without compensation for the suffered damages.
They recall that the detentions on September 23, 2019, were aimed at halting protests against the 'procés' trial verdict, with the goal of criminalizing and demobilizing the independence movement, accusing them of terrorism with a "Spanish media lynching."
The CDR highlight that the thirteen companions currently supported are merely the "most visible tip of repression against thousands of activists" and against "an entire people seeking liberation from a corrupt state." They insist that the issue is not whether the amnesty law fits within the European framework, but rather the lack of national freedoms in Spain.
The protest, to be held at the Mur de la Llibertat at 7:00 PM, is considered important whether the TJUE ruling is favorable or not. If favorable, pressure will be applied to the PSOE and its delegation in Catalonia. If unfavorable, Spain's influence over European institutions will be denounced, reiterating that there is no solution to the conflict within the Spanish state.
Prior to the protest, at 5:00 PM, an event will take place at the Casal Can Capablanca, also in Sabadell.
