The Government of Catalonia, through Civil Protection, elevated the INUNCAT plan to EMERGENCY phase this midday. Forecasts from the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) indicate exceptional rainfall in intensity and accumulation over the next few hours and until Sunday, which could be accompanied by strong winds and possible tornadoes.
The period of greatest risk is expected from this evening, through the night, and until Sunday midday. Consequently, a resolution has been issued with several restrictions that will be in effect from 8 PM today, Saturday, until 2 PM on Sunday in 20 counties: Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Alt Penedès, Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès, Garraf, Garrotxa, Gironès, Pla de l’Estany, Vallès Occidental, Vallès Oriental, Maresme, Selva, Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Baix Penedès, Osona, Ripollès, Tarragonès, and Moianes.
The limitations include restricting non-essential travel, suspending activities in natural areas, parks, and urban gardens, as well as sports, cultural, leisure, and recreational activities. Markets, fairs, and other outdoor commercial or public events are also suspended, along with any activity located in a flood-prone zone. Teleworking is recommended, and educational, university, and basic social services activities are suspended.
An ES-ALERT will be sent this afternoon to the affected counties, and a new technical committee meeting will be held shortly. Although the most intense rainfall is expected in the mentioned areas, caution is advised throughout Catalonia, urging people to avoid crossing flooded areas, rivers, or streams. In case of emergency, call 112.
