The Government Delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, visited the municipality yesterday to witness firsthand the effects of the storm, particularly in the L'Ametller neighborhood and the Les Vernedes Municipal Sports Zone, where the damage is considered severe.
Accompanied by municipal representatives and the Deputy Government Delegate in Barcelona, Mari Carmen Garcia-Calvillo, Prieto observed the devastation caused by the floods in the streets and homes of the L'Ametller neighborhood. He also witnessed the recovery and support efforts for affected residents being carried out by the Firefighters, Civil Protection, the Municipal Works Brigade, and ADF Montcada.
The facilities of the Municipal Sports Zone have suffered severe damage. The football pitch and athletics tracks are destroyed, while the tennis courts, summer pools, and the multi-purpose hall used by the Montornès Karate Club are flooded and covered in mud. Part of the perimeter wall has also collapsed. The entire facility is currently closed to the public.
The Central Government plans to subsidize up to 50% of the repair costs for damage to municipal facilities declared as severely affected by a Civil Protection emergency. Meanwhile, contributions are being sought from other institutions such as the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona Provincial Council. The Catalan Government has already approved an initial line of 20 million euros in direct subsidies to aid affected municipalities.
The Montornès City Council has met with local sports entities to find solutions for the over 2,000 athletes who use the Les Vernedes facilities. Contacts are being maintained with federations and neighboring municipalities to enable competitions and relocate training sessions.
