After a decade without experiencing a promotion, the border club has managed to move up a category with a renewed philosophy. The last significant promotion for La Jonquera was in June 2016, when they reached Tercera División. Now, the context is different, as the entity decided to restart from Quarta Catalana in the summer of 2024, opting for a squad mainly composed of local players.
“"We made the right decision."
This decision involved giving up their spot in Segona Catalana, despite having avoided relegation without difficulty. The departure of many players led to a restructuring, turning the reserve team into the first team. This commitment to local talent has reversed the previous trend, where most players were from outside. Furthermore, the "restart" has eased the economic pressure on the entity, allowing them to save on the first team and invest in youth football, which has about 220 players.
The cohesion of the group, mainly formed by players from La Jonquera and its surroundings, has been a key factor. This connection with the municipality has helped fill the Municipal de Les Forques every Sunday, with attendance often exceeding three hundred people. The team has shown great willingness to adapt to the coach's playing style, highlighting their solidity at home, where they have only drawn once all season.
One of the standout players has been Pep Vergara, who returned to his hometown club in the summer of 2024, after playing for Figueres. His decision, motivated by fatherhood and the desire to experience football in a more relaxed way, has been fundamental for the team. Vergara, thirty years old, has started in 23 of the 24 matches and has scored 16 goals, adapting to a more direct and competitive playing style.
“"We will go as far as we can, and if we don't get promoted further, it's fine. Above all, we want to ensure that the young people of La Jonquera can play at home."
The La Jonquera project will continue with the same philosophy, maintaining the local base and with the same coach. The main objective is for the young people of the town to have the opportunity to play at home, without pressure for an immediate new promotion to Segona Catalana.
