This comprehensive action, expected to be completed before summer, primarily aims at cleaning and protecting this natural area. Among the planned actions, the eradication of invasive flora, especially the so-called cat's claw, which had significantly spread over the sand in recent years, stands out.
In addition to removing foreign vegetation, the project includes improving dune demarcation and installing new signage. These signs will warn visitors about the habitat's fragility and prohibit access to preserve its integrity. The placement of sand retention nets at strategic points is also planned to reinforce dune stabilization.
The 87,000 euro investment is funded through the Sustainable Tourism Plans in Destinations program, with resources from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and European NextGenerationEU funds.
“"To consolidate the municipality's beaches as resilient beaches, capable of facing the consequences of climate change and meteorological phenomena, as well as, especially, fixing and protecting dune areas."
The project, named Resilient beaches for climate change adaptation, landscape improvement, and dune stabilization, underscores the importance of the Empúries coastal dune. This public dune and forest area, located in Sant Martí d’Empúries, within the municipality of L'Escala, possesses fragile ecosystems and significant natural and historical value, with its preservation being crucial for vegetation, habitats, and regulating public use in such a sensitive zone.
