Engineer Metkhal Khalawi has launched Xiuxiuejar, the first social network conducted entirely in Catalan, reaching over 2,000 active users within its first month of existence.

The platform was developed by Metkhal Khalawi, a Syrian refugee who moved to Catalonia in 2017 after escaping ISIS captivity. Based in Molins de Rei, Khalawi built the site to promote the local language and ensure user data remains outside the reach of major American tech corporations.

"The server is hosted at my house. This data does not go out: it doesn't go to Google, X, or any American platform."

The network functions similarly to X, featuring short posts called Xius with a 280-character limit. While currently web-based, mobile applications for Android and iOS are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
