The pedagogical suitcase aims to deepen knowledge about this heritage element, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. The contents range from the trades linked to the wood transported by the raftmen (raiers) to the evolution of rivers due to dam construction and the invasive species affecting biodiversity.
Before making the material available to Pedagogical Resource Centers across Catalonia, a pilot test is being conducted to validate the contents. This test will take place at Escola Els Raiers in la Pobla de Segur (Pallars Jussà) and escola Sant Climent in Coll de Nargó (Alt Urgell).
“"The thematic axis of the raftmen's suitcase is the dissemination of the ancient trade and the festival that commemorates it every year in the municipalities of Coll de Nargó and la Pobla de Segur."
According to Marc Ballesté, director of the Pyrenees Chair, the idea is for the material to introduce both the biological aspects of the rivers and the importance of the tradition. Furthermore, it includes activities designed to teach mathematics and delve into the specific language of the ancient trade. The suitcase is intended for use in schools in raftmen municipalities and throughout the rest of Catalonia.
Since the creation of the Pyrenees Chair in 2016, other pedagogical suitcases have been developed covering key regional topics, such as the reintroduction of the bear in the Pyrenees, the Falles del Pirineu festival, and local fauna. Work is currently underway on a collection of stories linked to this educational resource.
