Montserrat Bartoló Viñas, a mother of two and resident of Avinyó, was diagnosed with a breast tumor two years ago during a routine gynecological check-up. After undergoing surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, she has now recovered and returned to her job as a physiotherapist at the Clínica de Sant Josep.
“"I was physically a mess, but physical exercise is key. I was very clear that it was what would benefit me the most."
Bartoló participated in the Move On pilot program, promoted by the Fundació Althaia (at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Manresa), the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, and the Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa. The goal was to scientifically certify that strength training could be safely and effectively integrated during oncological treatment.
Beyond the physical benefits, the participant stressed the emotional utility of the program. The bond generated with the fourteen women who participated in the Althaia trial was crucial for mutual support, helping them exchange experiences and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The Move On project confirmed that moderate-to-high intensity strength exercise is safe and well-tolerated in oncology patients when properly prescribed and supervised. Althaia reminds the public that regular physical activity is vital for prevention, estimating that between 30% and 40% of cancers could be avoided through healthy lifestyle changes.
