The OCU study, which evaluated products sold in Spanish supermarkets, was conclusive: despite the popularity of these foods for their convenience and price, the majority show a deficient nutritional composition, with high levels of saturated fats, salt, and calories.
“"They are very unhealthy, due to a poor nutritional composition."
Out of the 62 references analyzed, only five achieved an “acceptable nutritional composition” rating. These include the Ham and Cheese Pizza from Eroski, the Prosciutto Pizza from Hacendado, the Ham and Cheese Pizza from El Corte Inglés Selection, the BBQ Pizza from Mamma Mancini (Aldi), and the BBQ Chicken Sauce Pizza from Campofrío.
One of the main problems detected is the high content of saturated fats, especially derived from cheese, which is often low quality. The OCU points out that cheese and vegetarian pizzas often exceed the acceptable threshold of 5% saturated fats, which are considered detrimental to cardiovascular health. Therefore, the organization recommends limiting the consumption of these products and opting for healthier alternatives, such as homemade pizzas.
