The Central Sindical Independent i de Funcionaris (CSIF) of the Reus City Council has once again warned of the “severe lack of personnel” in the Guàrdia Urbana, as well as the “systematic delay” in negotiations and the “non-compliance with agreements reached”. According to the union, this situation is causing a “progressive deterioration of road and citizen safety in the city”.
The CSIF detailed that the security operation for the Carnival Race was covered primarily by agents from the ordinary operational shift, superior commanders, Civil Protection volunteers, and private security guards, rather than specific police reinforcements, leaving the rest of the municipality with minimal coverage.
“"The problem is not the race, but how security is planned. If the city was left with only one patrol for this event, the situation could be even worse during Carnival."
In response to these accusations, the Reus City Council maintains that negotiations with the unions are “open, active, and involve all organizations”. Municipal sources explained that a new meeting was held this week where the council accepted a proposal agreed upon by the working group, which the unions must now validate.
The local government called “for responsibility and not to generate anxiety among the public,” emphasizing that security remains a priority. They highlighted the increase in the public safety budget for 2026, with the goal of reaching 182 Guàrdia Urbana officers, advancing the figure initially planned for 2027.
