The Palamós City Council presented in November 2022 the preliminary project for the comprehensive reform of the Municipal Market. The proposal confirms the facility's continuity on Avinguda de Catalunya, with a complete building renovation to adapt it to current commercial needs, improve accessibility and energy efficiency, and resolve historical flooding issues.
The presentation, held at the market itself, was attended by Mayor Lluís Puig and the Councilor for Markets, Emili Colls. The building, inaugurated in 1989, required a deep renovation after more than thirty years of operation.
The debate over the market's future spanned several years. The original stall concessions ended in 2019, and new temporary concessions were awarded until May 2025 to allow activity while the definitive project was prepared. The pandemic delayed this process, during which various options were considered, including building a new market or rehabilitating the existing one.
FECOTUR's proposal to move the market to l'Arbreda was discarded due to high costs. Ultimately, the decision was made to keep the current location, an option favored by most stallholders. The renovation will transform both the interior and the facades of the building.
The preliminary project envisions a ground floor of 1,203 m² for commercial activity, with larger stalls and a reduced number to adapt to new sales methods and promote local products. The first floor (468 m²) will be for parking and services, and the second (440 m²) for warehouses and workshops.
The exterior will change significantly, with a fully glazed ground floor to maximize natural light and visibility of commercial activity. The upper floors will feature a ceramic brick facade to improve ventilation and provide sun protection. The renovation will also raise the pavement by about twenty centimeters to address flooding issues.
The project includes measures to reduce energy consumption, aiming for an A energy rating and a decrease of over 30%. Photovoltaic panels, LED lighting, low-emissivity glass, new insulation, and high-performance electrical equipment will be installed, along with charging points for electric vehicles.
The outdoor space will also be transformed, integrating the square between the Market and the Post Office, on Emili Joan street, as an outdoor sales area and a new green space. The estimated investment was around 2.2 million euros, with a request for funding from the European Next Generation funds.
Construction finally began in October 2025, with a planned duration of one year. During the renovation, eleven stallholders moved to a temporary space. The final investment was approximately 2.4 million euros, with 1.3 million coming from the Next Generation funds.
