Tourism promoter Hans Zimmermann, creator of the emblematic 700-meter Calafell Slide toboggan, passed away on January 22 after failing to recover from surgery.

The attraction, which snakes down a mountain in the Baix Penedès municipality, was a surprise to many locals when the Swiss designer built it in 1989. Since its opening, it quickly became a major reference point.
The Calafell toboggan was the only one of its kind on the entire Iberian Peninsula and remains a popular spot, drawing thousands of visitors every season, according to Calafell Slide.
The loss of Zimmermann signifies the passing of a pioneer who significantly helped put Calafell on the map of emerging tourist attractions in the country. Many residents have enjoyed descending the sled run over the years.
