As half of Catalonia is already celebrating major festivals and Barcelona gears up for the Gràcia, Sants, and La Mercè festivities, the council convenes its July plenary session. This will be the last before the summer break and before entering the final year of the municipal mandate in September, with an eye on the 2027 municipal elections.
This Friday's session is expected to be calm, with no major executive matters pending. Mayor Jaume Collboni will use the opportunity to secure the re-election of David Bondia as the ombudsman of Barcelona, with anticipated support from Junts, BComú, and ERC.
The municipal government led by the PSC will face opposition criticism regarding the state of infrastructure projects in the city. Recent incidents, including the fire at the L5 metro construction site, the collapse on the R2 line in Vallbona, and the sinkhole caused by the L9 tunnel boring machine in Putxet, will be discussed. Junts will call for a support plan for businesses affected by long-term works, while the PP will seek explanations from the mayor on the handling of the sinkhole.
The plenary will also coincide with the heatwave gripping the city. In response to climate change, both BComú and ERC will present proposals to offer municipal aid to the most vulnerable households for installing cooling systems such as air conditioners, fans, and awnings.
Vox, meanwhile, intends to propose a sanitary cordon against entities and associations involved in street vending, demanding they receive no municipal subsidies.
