Barcelona is bracing for its third summer heatwave, which may bring even higher temperatures but also significant mugginess due to humidity and Saharan dust.

A slight temperature drop at the start of the weekend marks the transition between the summer's second and third heatwaves. The Procicat plan, activated on July 5th, has been temporarily deactivated by Civil Protection, pending potential reactivation.
The upcoming heatwave could see temperatures higher than previously recorded in some parts of Catalonia. However, along the coast and in Barcelona, the presence of clouds, suspended Saharan dust, and ambient humidity might moderate peak temperatures, increasing the muggy sensation.
An Atlantic low-pressure system will contribute to the arrival of warm, humid air from the Sahara and the Mediterranean. This air mass, crossing the African desert at altitude and moving over the Mediterranean at surface level, will carry Saharan dust.
Forecasting models predict notable concentrations of Saharan dust from Sunday, July 12th, in Barcelona and Catalonia. This phenomenon will alter the sky's appearance, shifting from the usual blue hues to paler or brownish tones.
Although sunshine will be prevalent, sea winds may generate low clouds along the coast and pre-coastal areas, intensifying the mugginess. High and medium clouds from North Africa are also expected, and muddy rain is not ruled out during the week.
Temperatures at altitude (1,500 m) could reach 28 degrees Celsius. Inland and western Catalonia are expected to see highs exceeding 40 degrees, while coastal temperatures might be moderated by the sea breeze. The hottest days are anticipated between Thursday, July 16th, and Friday, July 17th, with temperatures potentially surpassing 35 degrees in Barcelona.
Nights are expected to be torrid, making sleep difficult in the city.
