The Spanish Interior Ministry opened and subsequently closed a confidential investigation in 2020 regarding Commissioner Emilio de la Calle during his time in Barcelona.

The SUP police union reported De la Calle for 'abusive' leadership while he headed the Foreign National and Borders Brigade. Complaints included public humiliation, shouting, and arbitrary punishments. However, the National Police headquarters dismissed the case due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

"I am going to leave you like a piece of meat, I will break you."

Emilio de la Calle · Police Commissioner (recorded audio)
The commissioner is currently under investigation by the Audiencia Nacional for sexual and workplace harassment against a subordinate in India. He was suspended from duty in April after recordings surfaced showing verbal and physical aggression during his posting in New Delhi.
During his years in Barcelona, which began in 2017, De la Calle was known for his intense management style and efforts to coordinate with the Mossos d'Esquadra, though many former colleagues describe his methods as outdated and violent.
