Medical professionals who treated a six-week-old baby with severe injuries last March at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona have testified before the court investigating the child's parents. According to legal sources, the medical staff stated that the baby's anal injuries were caused by the voluntary insertion of an object, possibly multiple times, and described them as the most severe they had ever seen in their careers, despite extensive experience with abused infants.
The magistrate specializing in juvenile violence took statements from four healthcare professionals. A pediatric on-call doctor, the coordinator of the abuse unit, and an abdominal surgeon confirmed that the injuries observed on the baby's brain, face, ribs, anus, and femurs could not have been accidental. They concluded these were traumas caused violently, although they could not determine the exact cause.
The doctors detailed that the internal anal fissures were not caused by the size of the stools, as initially suggested by the parents. They ruled out accidental injuries from digital stimulation and pointed to an intent to cause harm. Regarding the femur fractures, they dismissed accidental causes like getting caught in the crib, suggesting they were likely caused by twisting and stretching, potentially leading to severe arterial damage that endangered the baby's life.
Other injuries were also ruled out, such as a scrotal hematoma attributed to a poorly placed urine bag, or a cheek hematoma that was not from an affectionate pinch. Injuries to the femoral heads and rib fractures, along with neurological damage, could have resulted from shaking, the long-term effects of which are still being assessed.
Regarding the mother, some medical staff described her as nervous and distressed, while others perceived her as detached. All agreed that the father showed little care towards the newborn. Concurrently, the mother's colleagues testified that she had expressed via messages her intention to separate from her husband due to his treatment of their son.
Family members of the investigated individuals are scheduled to testify, and the father's defense is expected to request his release. The court awaits the data from the mobile phones of the investigated parties and a biological test. The investigated individuals will also be interviewed by psychiatric experts in the near future.
