A study led by UManresa doctoral candidate Jordi Padrós-Augé concluded that despite the unanimous recommendation of therapeutic exercise in Catalonia's headache units, the lack of follow-up programs prevents patient adherence.

Controlled physical activity is essential for the non-pharmacological treatment of primary headaches and chronic migraines, as it reduces the intensity and frequency of headache episodes. However, the research published in the Revista Española de Salud Pública found that there are no structured programs to monitor patients' physical activity.

The study concludes that, currently, there are no structured programs or specific follow-up of the physical activity performed by patients, which makes it difficult for exercise to become a constant and regular practice.

The work, which is part of Jordi Padrós' doctoral thesis, interviewed 27 healthcare professionals, including neurologists and nursing staff, from 10 Catalan headache units. The data revealed that 100% of professionals recommend moderate aerobic exercise, but its practical implementation is highly limited.
The research identifies barriers such as the high frequency of headache episodes, other health problems like fibromyalgia or neck pain, and the lack of adapted offerings. Conversely, having the support of a professional to supervise and guide the therapeutic exercise is a key facilitating factor.
To reverse this situation, the article titled Recomendaciones de ejercicio terapéutico para el tratamiento de las cefaleas primarias proposes two main strategies: the incorporation of specialized physiotherapists into headache units and the use of technological tools to facilitate program monitoring.
