The festival, held for decades, will feature five large cauldrons to prepare approximately 700 liters of chocolate mixed with milk from the cooperative of Palau de Cerdanya. This summer delicacy attracts thousands of people each year who do not want to miss the ritual.
The "Mestres Xicolaters" (Master Chocolatiers), members of the Confraria dels Mestres Xicolaters de Cerdanya, are responsible for preparing the chocolate outdoors. Using enormous cauldrons over a wood fire, they mix the key ingredients: chocolate, milk from Cerdanya, and sugar. A little water is added to prevent sticking, and the secret, they admit, lies in the stirring technique, a recipe passed down through generations.
The event program begins at 9 AM with the opening of the market featuring local producers and artisans. At 11 AM, there will be a chocolate tasting, followed by a sardana dance at 11:30 AM. For those who have made advance reservations, a meal will be served at 1 PM. The afternoon includes a pétanque competition at 3:30 PM and another sardana dance session at 5 PM.
The exact origin of the Palau de Cerdanya xocolatada is debated, with theories placing it over three hundred and fifty years ago. Regardless of its precise beginnings, the festival has been and continues to be a day of reunion for families and neighbors. This tradition, preserved by its inhabitants, represents an act of local pride and respect for their ancestors.
The confraria, founded in 1983, received the Cerdà de l’any distinction in 2015, an award presented by the Consell Comarcal de la Cerdanya. The festival has become a significant tourist attraction and is held in the Prat dels Verns, near La Vanera.
