The PTA of FEDAC Pont Major presented a motion to the Girona City Council plenary session on Monday to promote the creation of an institute-school ensuring educational provision for ages 0 to 16 in the neighborhood.

The initiative, which seeks a public-private collaboration with the public school Carme Auguet, addresses the dual challenge facing the Girona school map: declining birth rates and a lack of secondary education provision in the neighborhood. This situation is aggravated by the loss of ESO (compulsory secondary education) at Institut Narcís Xifra, which will transition to a Vocational Training center.

"It is not an ambitious goal, but we demand the return of educational provision from zero to sixteen years old in Pont Major. It is the missing piece to complete the neighborhood plan."

The motion was approved with votes in favor from PSC, Junts, PP, and Vox, while Guanyem and ERC abstained. The PTA spokesperson, Anna Moreno, asked the City Council to urge the Department of Education to create a shared dialogue table to evaluate the project's viability.
The Education Councillor, Queralt Vila, highlighted the complexity of the situation, noting that both FEDAC Pont Major and Carme Auguet centers have many vacant places, hindering their operation. While understanding the neighborhood's concern, she pointed out that the Department of Education currently rejects the initiative, and the City Council is actively seeking short-term solutions to ensure the viability of the centers.
