The Paeria de Balaguer will reinforce guidance for families to achieve the maximum possible I3 pre-registrations, aiming to prevent the closure of the second infant education line at the Gaspar de Portolà school. The municipal government deems it crucial for families with three-year-old children to formalize their application within the deadline, running from March 4 to 12, given Education's intention to suppress one group.
“"to have a clear picture of the number of students who will start I3"
To support this initiative, the city council has organized an informative session on February 19 at the Paeria's assembly hall. This action is part of the community project Arrels i ales (Roots and Wings), within the Educational Environment Plan, seeking to support families during educational transitions and reduce associated misinformation.
The Gaspar de Portolà educational community and the Paeria argue that nineteen children are already accounted for just by students starting I3 who have siblings already enrolled at the center. They warn that if the second line closes, it would be impossible to incorporate new families, even if the school were their first choice.
The Department of Education links the closure to demographic evolution, estimating 115 I3 students in Balaguer next year, distributed across eight lines. However, census data for the 2027-2028 academic year suggests a rebound with 135 children. The Federated Associations of Students' Families of Catalonia (aFFaC) urge Education to reconsider the decision, a request also made by the Paeria, which proposed maintaining the line as a "pilot test" with a lower ratio.
