The Sort Library has inaugurated the exhibition Solstices, a display delving into popular winter and summer solstice rituals, such as Sant Joan and Christmas, based on the documentary legacy of Ramon Violant i Simorra.

The opening was attended by Ignasi Ros, representing the Ecomuseu de les Valls d'Àneu, and Marc Escolà, from the Redort association. The exhibition, open until June 30, is based on the review of over 30,000 work files left by Violant i Simorra, many containing previously unpublished information on Pyrenean traditions like the Alòs bonfires.
The exhibition also features a printed catalogue detailing popular rituals and traditions associated with the winter and summer solstices. These customs, documented as early as 1930 in the book Costums de Catalunya, are considered remnants of pre-Christian agrarian cults and domestic and crop protection rituals, which have survived to this day in festivals like Sant Joan and Christmas.
Visitors can learn more about bonfires, songs, and popular dances, drawing from Violant i Simorra's notes collected between 1940 and 1949. During the inauguration, the fallaires de Sort (Sort's bonfire performers) interpreted the traditional Cançó dels Fallaires de Sort, breathing new life into these ancient traditions.
The exhibition is complemented by a display of bibliographic recommendations from the library's local collection, offering attendees a more comprehensive view of the area's cultural heritage.
