The significant temperature rise in the Ponent region, with peaks potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius, has transformed daily life in Lleida. Municipal pools have become the primary gathering point to combat the intense heat, contrasting with streets and squares that are considerably less crowded during the central hours of the day.
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya has issued warnings for the situation, particularly in the plain area of Lleida. Residents consulted emphasize the importance of staying hydrated and using sun protection as essential measures. The use of fans and air conditioning units has become widespread in homes to ensure thermal comfort.
Protecció Civil maintains the Procicat plan active for high temperatures, with a specific alert for very intense night-time heat in various coastal and pre-coastal areas of Catalonia until Tuesday, June 22nd. Since the alert began on June 19th, the Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) has attended to 55 individuals for heat-related issues.
Of these medical assistances, 58% required transfer to a healthcare facility by ambulance, while the remaining 42% received telephone support through 061 Salut Respon without needing hospital transport.
The Centre de Coordinació Operativa de Catalunya has requested municipalities to provide cool spaces or air-conditioned rooms for the public. Special vigilance is urged for vulnerable groups, such as individuals over 75 without family support, people with disabilities, or mobility limitations.
The Meteocat forecasts that temperatures will exceed the health danger threshold this Sunday in the Ponent region and northeastern Catalonia, as well as in central coastal counties. For Monday, a temperature increase is expected across all of Catalonia, intensifying the effects of the current heatwave.
