The Ministry of the Interior has appointed María Pilar Callejero Cornao as the new provincial commissioner of Lleida, marking the first time a woman has led the force in the region since March 12.

Callejero, who reached the rank of commissioner in 2018, takes over from Antonio Royo. The leadership change follows public and institutional pressure regarding Royo's past, specifically a 2003 conviction for harassment of a subordinate in Gipuzkoa.
With extensive experience in immigration and border control in Zaragoza, Callejero is seen as a strategic fit for Lleida. The province manages significant seasonal worker documentation and the Farga de Moles border crossing with Andorra.

"The unrest produced in different institutional spheres affects the interest of the service and could lead to a serious deterioration of the National Police image."
