The activation of the Special Emergency Plan for Floods in Catalonia (Inuncat) occurs in response to the forecast of persistent rainfall that will affect a large part of the country. The main objective is to coordinate emergency services and conduct exhaustive monitoring of the episode, which is expected to be particularly intense in the southern half and the coast.
Citizens are asked to exercise extreme caution when traveling and avoid outdoor activities in flood-prone areas, remembering that rivers, streams, and ravines should never be crossed.
The Catalan Meteorological Service warns that rainfall could exceed 100 liters per square meter in 24 hours in the regions of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and, notably, those of Tarragona. The orange alert (high danger) affects Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Conca de Barberà, and Priorat, while Tarragonès and Baix Penedès are under yellow alert.
Given this situation, several municipal councils in Camp de Tarragona, including those of Tarragona, Cambrils, and Salou, have activated their municipal action plans for flood risk. The intense rainfall episode is expected to last from the morning of Saturday, January 17, until the morning of Sunday, January 18, with the possibility of extending until Tuesday, January 20.
In addition to Inuncat, the Special Emergency Plan for Snowfall (Neucat) has also been activated in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, where accumulations of more than 40 centimeters are expected at high altitudes. Swell will also be significant in Alt Empordà, with waves exceeding 2.5 meters.
