Social Security affiliation grows in Catalonia, with Tarragona showing high temporality

The number of Social Security affiliates in Catalonia increased by 1.9% year-on-year in April, with the city of Tarragona showing a monthly increase of 1.5% and a high temporality rate.

Social Security affiliation in Catalonia saw a 1.9% year-on-year increase in April, adding 68,675 new affiliates, although some regions in Tarragona and the Aran Valley remained stable.

According to data from the Institut d’Estadística de Catalunya (Idescat), the total number of affiliates reached 3,725,235. This growth was widespread across all Catalan regions, with the exception of Priorat, Terra Alta, and the Aran Valley, where figures remained stable compared to the previous year.
Among the regions with the largest year-on-year increases, Baix Penedès stood out with 3.8% and Osona with 3.4%. Segarra and Segrià also showed significant growth, both with a 2.8% increase.
Regarding monthly evolution, Catalonia gained 31,810 affiliates compared to March, a 0.9% increase. In the Tarragona province, Ribera d’Ebre was one of the regions with the best results, showing a monthly increase of 2.4%. In contrast, the Aran Valley experienced the largest inter-monthly drop in Catalonia, with a 17% decrease.
In municipalities with over 50,000 inhabitants, all recorded an increase in the number of affiliates compared to the previous year. Vilanova i la Geltrú led the growth with 3.6%, followed by Viladecans (3.4%), Manresa (3.2%), and l’Hospitalet de Llobregat (3.1%). The city of Barcelona grew by 0.8%, Sant Cugat del Vallès by 0.6%, and Castelldefels by 0.3%.
In the city of Tarragona, affiliation also increased by 1.5% compared to March, while in Reus the increase was 1.6%. Furthermore, Tarragona is among the Catalan municipalities with a higher temporality rate in salaried affiliations, at 12.3%, similar to Lleida and Girona.
By economic sectors, services were the main driver of growth in Catalonia, with 65,665 more affiliations than a year ago, a 2.1% increase. Construction was the only sector that lost affiliations, with a 1.4% drop across Catalonia. In the Tarragona province, construction particularly declined in Garraf, with a 5.5% decrease, while Terra Alta recorded a 5.6% increase in this sector.
