The Tarragona City Council began works on Monday, January 19, to install 1,896 new telescopic stands at the Palau d'Esports, increasing capacity to 4,210 seats.

The action, which will complete the emblematic Anella Mediterrània facility, is possible thanks to a 700,000 euro subsidy granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The plan involves installing 1,896 retractable seats through seven new courtside stands, featuring an automatic opening and closing system.

"The start of the new stands installation means settling a historical debt of the Generalitat Government with the city, dating back to the construction of the pavilion for the Mediterranean Games in 2018."

The works, carried out by the company Disseny Tea3 SLU, will be executed in two phases to avoid interfering with sports activities. Construction will pause in mid-February for the Spanish Table Tennis Championships and will resume so the stands can debut during the Copa de la Reina de Bàsquet (Queen's Basketball Cup), scheduled for late March.
The Mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, highlighted that this is a very important day for the city, as the Palau d'Esports is finally being completed. This facility hosts training for thirteen clubs and over 1,500 athletes weekly. The expansion will allow the venue to organize relevant international competitions.
