Sabadell native Fidela Renom i Soler made history on January 14, 1934, by becoming the first woman elected as a councillor for Sabadell City Council during landmark local elections.

Despite the 1931 Constitution granting universal suffrage, women in Catalonia did not vote until the 1933 general elections. In this era of democratic progress, Fidela Renom stood out within the left-wing coalition of Círcol Republicà Federal, ERC, and Unió Socialista de Catalunya.

"You must be very serious. Don't let the City Hall look like a brothel!"

Serving under Mayor Magí Marcè Segarra, Renom focused on Social Assistance. She professionalized the Maternity Clinic and established the first free nurseries for working-class families through the Feminine Lay League.
After going into exile in France in 1939, she returned in 1947 to continue her social work. She passed away on September 11, 1987, and is remembered today with a public square named in her honour in Sabadell.
