Young researchers Arnau Roig and Pau Benlloch were honored yesterday, Monday, December 15, in Valls with the IX Josefina Cardó Youth Research Awards for their outstanding Final Degree Projects.

The first prize, endowed with 1,200 euros, went to Arnau Roig Jové for his work “Construint des de la pinya: repensant la gestió de la Coordinadora de Colles Castelleres de Catalunya” (Building from the base: rethinking the management of the Coordinadora de Colles Castelleres de Catalunya). This research analyzes the need for a new organizational model for the CCCC.
Roig examines the evolution of folkloric practices, such as castells (human towers), towards forms of sports activity, suggesting this transformation requires more robust governance structures. The paper proposes a new model based on comparative analysis of sports federations, aiming to ensure leadership, sustainability, and cohesion without losing the essence of the casteller tradition, recognized as intangible cultural heritage by Unesco.
The second award, worth 600 euros, was given to Pau Benlloch Arnau for the project “Un concert pedagògic a les escoles: Robert Gerhard i Els focs de Sant Joan per al cicle superior de primària” (A pedagogical concert in schools: Robert Gerhard and Els focs de Sant Joan for upper primary cycle). Benlloch proposes an educational project to introduce contemporary music, specifically the work of composer Robert Gerhard, to primary students. Her mother collected the award on her behalf.
The author emphasizes the importance of preparing listeners to understand musical languages that deviate from conventional tonal structures, arguing that children have a great capacity for experimentation. The work advocates for an active, playful, and experiential pedagogical approach.
The Josefina Cardó Youth Research Awards are intended to recognize excellence in social sciences and humanities research linked to Valls and the Alt Camp region. Both winners also receive a complete collection of “Valls i la seva història” in addition to the monetary prize.
