The announcement of Joan Roig's resignation was made public last Sunday through an open letter, thus formalizing his departure from the mayoralty of the Montsià municipality. This decision comes at a time of local political tension, with opposition groups (Junts, CUP, and non-attached councillor Meritxell Ulldemolins) demanding an extraordinary plenary session to address the governing situation.
The replacement at the head of the Alcanar council will be Marc Chavalera, an economist by training and until now responsible for the Economy and Finance portfolios. His designation as the new mayor occurs in accordance with internal government agreements, ensuring the continuity of the municipal executive.
The resignation of Roig and the imminent inauguration of Chavalera mark a significant change in local politics. This transition takes place while the city council continues with ongoing projects, such as works initiated last Thursday, December 11, as part of a larger project expected to conclude in 2026.
