The majority of consumers in Catalonia are adopting second-hand gifts during the Christmas campaign, seeking more sustainable and economic alternatives given the high expenditure projected for households.

The Christmas holidays lead to a significant increase in spending. According to forecasts by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), Spaniards will spend an average of 796 euros during the campaign, dedicating almost half of that budget to gifts. This expenditure, which often exceeds the initial forecasts of 52% of consumers, drives the search for more budget-friendly options.
In this context, second-hand gifts are gaining ground in Catalonia as a more sustainable and popular alternative. A recent study by Wallapop, the buying and selling platform, indicates that 57% of Catalans already consider second-hand items as an option for their holiday presents, thus avoiding exceeding their budget.

Among the most demanded categories for gifts during these dates are books, decoration items, and technology, reflecting a shift in Christmas consumption.

This trend is not only economic but also environmental. The Wallapop report suggests that Catalans could recover more than 130 euros by buying and selling reused products during the campaign. Furthermore, opting for second-hand items reduces unnecessary waste, contributing to a more responsible and sustainable consumption model during the holidays.
