The contract for lot 2 of the rehabilitation works at the Mercat de la Independència has been formalized by the Terrassa City Council with the company Artífex Infraestructuras, SLU. This phase, scheduled to begin in February 2026, has an awarded budget of 2,345,255.40 euros and will focus on completing the roofs and rehabilitating the 192 shutters surrounding the building.
The main goal is to improve energy efficiency by installing steel windows with thermal break and double-glazed chambers, preventing external air entry. Furthermore, the contract emphasizes preserving the aesthetic of the characteristic shutters: the company must install screen-printed tarpaulins reproducing the original image if the rehabilitation of a shutter exceeds three days.
The complete sealing of the shutters and the incorporation of double glazing should allow for a reduction of up to 48% in the sensation of cold and 24% in the sensation of heat.
Although the material execution is estimated at 14 months, the administrative duration is extended to 18 months to protect the market's economic activity. Works must be fully or partially halted during periods of maximum commercial activity, including the Christmas season (between November 20 and January 10), Easter, the Festa Major, and the Fira Modernista.
The award also includes social and environmental clauses, such as hiring at least two unemployed individuals to guarantee a minimum of 640 working hours. This investment will be financed through multi-year municipal budget allocations, concentrating the bulk of the expenditure in the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years.
