The incident occurred on the upper section of the BV-4243 road, in the municipality of Castellar del Riu (Berguedà), where extreme weather conditions surprised unprepared drivers. According to the Projecte 4 Estacions on Instagram, some cars were immobilized for not carrying the mandatory chains, while others suffered chain breakage during the ascent.
The situation was so critical that one of the affected vehicles had to be abandoned in the area, as the snow continued to accumulate, complicating rescue efforts and traffic flow. It should be noted that chains were mandatory on this road since Saturday morning.
The snowfall has affected numerous roads in the Pyrenees, making the use of chains mandatory on key routes. Affected roads include the BV-4031 in Berguedà and Ripollès, several routes in Pallars Sobirà (such as the C-13, C-28z, L-504, and L-510), the C-142b in Naut Aran (Vall d'Aran), and the C-462 between Solsonès and Alt Urgell.
Authorities have recommended extreme caution and the use of chains, covers, or snow tires for those planning to travel to mountain areas until, at least, this Wednesday.
